AAAS and Subaru are pleased to announce the longlist for the 2024 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize for Excellence in Science Books in the Middle Grades Science Book category. The Prize celebrates outstanding science writing and illustration for children and young adults and is meant to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for all ages.

The longlist titles in the 2024 Middle Grades Science Book category are:

• Good Food, Bad Waste: Let's Eat for the Planet, by Erin Silver. Illustrated by Suharu Ogawa. Orca Book Publishers, 2023.

• How Do Meerkats Order Pizza?: Wild Facts about Animals and the Scientists Who Study Them, written and illustrated by Brooke Barker. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2022.

• Is It Okay to Pee in the Ocean? The Fascinating Science of Our Waste and Our World, by Ella Schwartz. Illustrated by Lily Williams. Bloomsbury Children's Books, 2023.

• The Language of Plants: Understanding How Plants Communicate, by Helena Haraštová. Illustrated by Darya Beklemesheva. Albatros Media, 2023.

• The Planets Are Very, Very, Very Far Away: A Journey Through the Amazing Scale of the Solar System, by Mike Vago. The Experiment, 2022.

• A River's Gifts: The Mighty Elwha River Reborn, by Patricia Newman. Illustrated by Natasha Donovan. Millbrook Press, 2023.

• Superpower?: The Wearable-Tech Revolution, by Elaine Kachala. Illustrated by Belle Wuthrich. Orca Book Publishers, 2022. 

• There's No Cream in Cream Soda: Facts and Folklore About Our Favorite Drinks, by Kim Zachman. Illustrated by Peter Donnelly. Running Press Kids, 2023.

Finalists for the 2024 Prize will be announced in November. The Prize winners will be announced in February.
